The Symphony Orchestra of the Szczecin Philharmonic will perform at one of the world’s most prestigious concert halls – the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. The concert, conducted by Hansjörg Albrecht, will also feature the Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Chor Hamburg. The evening’s programme will include works by Richard Wagner as well as the rarely performed music of Walter Braunfels, which is being rediscovered by contemporary audiences.
It will be a truly dazzling celebration of the sound of the human voice, the Elbphilharmonie’s organ and a great symphony orchestra. The programme will feature excerpts from Richard Wagner’s operas – the Overture to Tannhäuser, the Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, and the Prelude to Parsifal – alongside the monumental Te Deum by Walter Braunfels for soprano, tenor, choir, organ and orchestra.
Walter Braunfels, born in 1882, drew profound inspiration from Wagner’s music. Alongside Richard Strauss, he was among the most frequently performed German-language opera composers of the first half of the 20th century, until the ban on the performance of his works in 1933. His music was championed by the leading conductors of the era, while his opera “The Birds” and the monumental Te Deum, inspired in scale by Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, brought him international acclaim.
After decades of neglect, Braunfels’s music has been rediscovered by audiences worldwide since the 1990s. Now it will resound in the symphonic splendour of Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, performed by the Symphony Orchestra of the Szczecin Philharmonic under the baton of Hansjörg Albrecht, the Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Chor Hamburg, and internationally acclaimed soloists Camilla Nylund (soprano) and Klaus Florian Vogt (tenor).
