POLMUZ - electronics with folk trance

The combination of the touching roughness of ancient electronics with a folk trance – this is the most accurate summary of the Polmuz band's performance, made by the jury of the New Tradition Festival in 2018. In a competition organized by Polish Radio, Polmuz has won the first prize and a special prize. As the musicians themselves emphasize, in their playing they try to recreate the old trance of folk music, which arose not only from everyday life, but also from various rituals and ritual forms. The musicians of past times did not use any instruments to create folk music. They just made THEIR OWN music.

Since the beginning of its activity, Polmuz has been using as a creative material about a hundred years of recordings of folk music from southern Wielkopolska – Śrem, Poznań and the surrounding area. They were recorded purely mechanically (that is – without the use of electric current) on the shellac plates. It took a lot of work and effort to digitize these works. Trance, circular structure, the large dose of madness – this is how they tell about their first impressions after listening to them. If they didn't know where they came from, they would have fired without hesitation: India! The recordings were recorded at dance parties – you can hear the voices of people playing and the clatter of shoes while jumping.


The primary improvisation, ritual trance and brutal narration constitute a futuristic vision of Polish folk music. The musicians have included old analog synthesizers, modern instruments and electronics in their performances. It's our rock and roll mixed with tradition – the performers explain. Their debut release entitled "Drzewiej" consists of two albums containing the same songs in different performances. The band Polmuz has performed at the Off Festival, Malta Festival, Solidarity of Arts and Ethno Port, among others, as well as at the Agnieszka Osiecka PR Concert Studio and the National Institute Audiovisual in Warsaw.
